"Philippines: Where the car horns need to be exchanged as frequently as the brake pads"
Dear Family and Friends:
So I am safely here in the Philippines. Finally. That was the longest flight of my life. It was super hard to spend 15 hours on a plane. Especially with such easily accessible movies I hadn't seen yet on the screen in front of me. I never thought it would be that much of a temptation. But we made it and it has been awesome so far.
The first thing we obviously noticed was the humidity when we got off the plane. But it was night time so it hasn't been too hot or anything. And really the humidity hasn't been that bad. I thought I would be dying. But I honestly think God is helping me to bear it and have a good attitude.
But for the driving out here? you couldn't pay me enough to drive with all of these yahoos. Sure, there are lines on the road, but nobody pays attention to that. People are just swerving in and out of each other and laying on their horns. Thankfully we were in a bus, so if anything did happen we would come out on top. But there really aren't any laws concerning driving. Just suggestions. And apparently the qualifications of getting a license out here are that you have to breath, eat and poop. That's how my branch president put it.
But the scenery here is unbelievable. We came in around 3am here so it was dark and I didn't see it before. But when I woke up this morning and opened up the blinds it just took my breath away. There are so many flowers and green trees and grass...It's hard to describe. I have never been anywhere tropical before so it was a huge change. I just sat at the windows and oohed and awed for 10 minutes. My companion thought it was pretty funny.
Anyways, it is awesome here. And apparently I know more tagalog than I thought too, which was helpful with all the natives and the airport.
God loves us. I know that with all my heart.
